Happy Fit Sports Event

Keeping an active lifestyle is important to a healthy mind and body so EMRS Team 4 was tasked to organize a sports themed fair; Happy Fit. The purpose of this event was to provide a platform for staff and students of Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) to purchase sports products for their daily regime. The overall in-charges for this event were Chanel and Ellena. Ke Xin and Royston were in-charge of logistics and Jia Li and Yi Tao were in-charge of advertising and promotion.

As the event title ‘Happy Fit’ was inspired by the movie ‘Happy Feet’, we decided to use penguins as the mascot of the event. 

On the first day of the event, we met at 7.45am and headed down to the fixtures room to get the logistics. We had to do minor changes to the floor plan as there were some space conflicts with the health event that happened concurrently with Happy Fit. Nonetheless, our team shifted the sport stacking booth and I-Appreciate booth back to the atrium smoothly as we still had space in the atrium.
The set up on the first day was delayed as that was the first time that our team did set up for an event. In addition to that, many vendors were caught in the traffic jam due to bad weather. The set up was completed by 10.45am.

The tear down for the first day was hindered by the audiences from the ‘NYP Got Talent’ event were standing all over the atrium. Nonetheless, we managed to tear down everything by 5.45pm.

On the second day, almost everything went smoothly except the set up as there was a lack of instructions given and some team members were running all over the place. Other than that, the event went smoothly with no hiccups. The tear down was much faster and smoother as compared to the first day as there was no crowd at the atrium. We managed to complete the tear down before 5.30pm.

Our key take away from this event is the importance of communication. Throughout the whole planning process, there were many incidents of miscommunication or even lack of communication which led to confusion and arguments within the team. We learnt that as a team, we must communicate more, have patience and empathise each other in order for a team to excel. These are the learning points that all of us will remember to take with us into our future career journey.    

The event went smoothly despite some loopholes on the ground. Everyone in the team contributed their efforts for Happy Fit even though there were some miscommunications. Overall, as the organizers, we are very grateful that the event was indeed a success.

Spelling Championship Finals 27 April 2013


Thoroughly entertained and booked up by the string of events we have had to handle, we have now come upon our very last one, the finals for the spelling bee.
The class and it's noise volume have now shrunken to its original size, like in the first few weeks of this stopover, as our new DBI classmates have left to their other stopovers. Coupling the change of manpower quantity is the minor shift in dynamics of this event. Like the preliminary rounds, the event situates itself at the Fairmont Ballroom, but this time, we are sharing the site, split in half, with another event.
With the endowed knowledge and spontaneous thinking that we have developed though the chain of events, even before we started planning for the finals, we felt quite calm and serene, ready for whatever we were about to encounter.
Much like the 2 other spelling bee rounds, primarily planned by ourselves and SPH, the objectives were clear just as they were straight-forward. It was a subtle combination of both the preliminary round’s location and the zonal round’s event structure. Though it sounds a little brag-ish, the planning was a piece of cake since we have already accustomed and tailored ourselves to handling the event, as we did before.
Onto the event itself, it was somewhat a spectacular conclusion to the national event. It was a little amusing to see the tenacity and intensity of the participants and audience rise as the primary school kids gradually descended from elimination, in utter disappointment. Circling past the slightly sinister observations, information on our roles and duties were conveyed impeccably, as was apparent through the success and execution of the EMRS class’ performance.

Riddled with a rush of nail-biting anxiety, it was down to the last few contestants. It is hard to imagine that these ‘kids’ are willing to put themselves in a flurry of discomforting emotions to strive for that phenomenal sense of joy and accomplishment. In a temporally locking, time-slowing moment, the last word was said and spelt. The winner emerged from ACS Primary School and he reigned in victor of his now nationally embellished accomplishment. Applause and relief slowly began to swallow the ballroom, slowly rinsing away as the competitors departed.

Just like that, our stay at EMRS has ended, ever so effortlessly. For the SBM students of the team, we will most likely be seeing each other at the MSC studio. Thus, proving to be another channel where we can work closely with each other again, as we have done so well together in EMRS.
Perhaps the biggest question any supervisor or companion would ask is “What did you take away from this stopover?” Well, here are some voiced opinions.
Feng Fang: Learning to step out my comfort zone, and attempt to speak English more often with my teammates.
Hui hui:  Housekeeping in EMRS taught me how to be a good maid.
Joanne: We get a good morning workout from dashing to class to not be late.
Hilariously entertaining and comically induced comments aside, and rather apparent through them, it can be seen that we have all bonded very well through our work and free time. It’s been a surprisingly fun, value-adding, and a blossoming experience with our friends and supervisors from both teams. As we have left, EMRS will always remain as a remarkable and highlighted memory of our poly lives.
To anyone, who is going, has been or is currently in EMRS, we can guarantee that you will have an extremely enriching and embellished time. Hope you will have as much fun as we had!
Extraordinary, entertaining and laced with an abundance of enjoyment and fun, EMRS not only gave or taught us the values we will come to keep, use or cherish, but it also gave us a staggering learning experience, diversifying us as people. Practically eclipsing over our now seemingly drab academic studies, we’re ready to take on the rest of our stopovers, heads held high, minds enlightened and hearts sated by the companionships that have embellished this stopover. EMRS is the best, really it is.

With the main objective of having the SBM and DBI students in EMRS Team to bond and have a strong chemistry between one and other, Amin and Jackson from Team 4 volunteered to take charge of the team building event to be held on 3rd May 2013, Friday, 1.15-5.30pm. 

Planning Stage
We created the games with a theme called “The Castaway”, which promotes many aspects such as cooperation, teamwork, integrity, determination, and many more.  We went through a whole trial series of the games and thorough consideration in which safety, cultivating critical and creative thinking are involved tremendously. 

Station 1: Shipwreck Part I
Participants are illustrated as the victims who encountered a shipwreck. Leaders of the tribe were blindfolded and required to locate their tribe mates through animals’ voices assigned to them.


Station 2: Shipwreck Part II
Now that they have found their own tribe mates, they had to compete with other tribes in the “Bombing Game” to determine the strongest team.


Station 3: Tribal Identity
Each tribe had to create a flag that represented their tribe’s unique identity. 







The supervisors namely Ms Quek, Ms Siow and Ms Choo were the judges to decide the tribe which has the best design that best fit the theme and the tribe’s name.

Station 4: Spoon Fed
This game defined the patience and resilience of the tribe mates. It was indeed very challenging to flip the spoons into the cup!



Station 5: Human Centipede
Each tribe mates was given a small piece of vanguard sheet to transfer the ping pong ball into the small plastic cup. This game showcased the agility and teamwork of the tribe mates.


Station 6: The Mouthjob
They had to bite on to a balloon and travel with a raft made with cupboards. Once they have reached the end point, they needed to throw the balloons using their mouth into the empty pail.


Station 7: The Duo
Good coordination and control are needed for this game of which two tribe mates had to tie their legs with a raffia string and at the same time, they were given straws and required to transfer the mini hula hook onto the cone.


Station 8: Track down your enemy’s village
Last game was similar to scavenger hunt where a representative from each tribe had to hide with their own tribe’s flag within the business block/premises and the opponent tribe had to go search for him/her within a stipulated time.

After the event

The tribe mates were all deadbeat, however, they were relatively happy and satisfied with the games. Many positive and useful feedback were also brought up by the students during the debrief. As the organizers, we are very glad that the whole event was a success.
