CEO Networking Session 2017

CEO Networking Session

Date: 1st February 2017
Time: 2-4pm

Speaker: Mr Logan Wong, Pure Senses Pte Ltd

Background

The CEO Networking Session was planned, organized and executed by EMRS Team 3.It involved Pure Senses Pte Ltd, Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) Students. The speaker was Mr Logan Wong, the Managing Director from Pure Senses Pte Ltd and was held at the Nanyang Polytechnic Blk A level 4 Performance Stage, Library.

Objectives
The objectives of the Networking Session were to allow students to interact and to learn from Mr Logan Wong as shared his personal experiences and road to success.

Pre-Event
This event was managed by Shiqi and Zhi Yan from the Diploma in Business Informatics as the rest were still at their previous stopover. We started off designing the posters. While waiting for the poster to be approved, we looked for a venue to hold the CEO Networking Session. After looking around, we proposed to have it at the Performance Stage at Library and Blk D1, Function Room. We then did out the floor plan and decided where to put up the posters and signages. Ms Quek sent out the finalised poster to other institutions to garner interests. While waiting for the other institutions to nominate students to join the CEO Networking Session, we started to print stickers as on that day itself, it will be very hectic so having stickers pasted on the attendees would allow us to differentiate between students visiting the library and the networking session. Poster was posted on Instagram to promote this event as well.

Also 74% of the attendees found that the duration was just right.

In summary, we can plan more of similar networking sessions in the future.

Conclusion & Learning Points
Even though it was a short event, we had lots of fun and we also experienced a lot of different aspects of planning an important event. Overall the networking session was a success even though there were a few hiccups, the team managed to pull it through together .We managed to establish good teamwork and team spirit throughout the whole event. It was really satisfying to see all the students and lectures from other institutions attending our event.

Nevertheless, we all agreed that our communication within the team could have been better to ensure that everything done was consistent and well-organised. Last but not least without the team and supervisor this networking session would not have been possible!

Team Bonding 2017

Team Bonding 2017
Date: 19th January 2017
Time: 1.30pm – 4.30pm
Venue: Nanyang Polytechnic, Outside CCA Room

Background
On 19th January 2017, the students from DBI conducted a team bonding activities from 1.30PM to 4.30PM. The team bonding activities were created to have the whole EMRS to bond as a team.

Objectives
The objective of this team bonding is to get the students from both SBM and SIT to get to know each other better as teamwork is critical in business. Students can learn how to communicate with one another as they will be facing challenges that need to be solved as a group. The activities ensure that the students can foster ties with one another and enjoy games as a whole EMRS team.

Pre-Event
The students from DBI started with discussing and brainstorming the ideas. We had to ensure that the activities we proposed were fun, interactive and engaging for everyone.
Initially, we planned to do outdoor activities such as Captain’s Ball and Running Man. However, we had considered that playing Running Man might disturb the school as students will be running around and Captain’s Ball might not be able to carry out due to the weather. Hence, we had come out with activities that can help to break the ice.

We prepared the logistics that we would need for the event, such as scrap paper, stationery and prizes. Having a budget of $30, we tried to maximize our budget by going to the Value Dollar Shop to get the prizes. We had managed to get a lot of snacks from the shop. Also, we divided the students in a way by trying to split students who were in the same class to maximize the opportunities for students to get to know people they would not usually mix with.

Day Event
The event started off outside CCA room, where everyone sat in a circle and started with the first activity, Wacko. The first activity was to allow everyone to remember the names as quick as possible. After everyone had introduced themselves, the person in the middle would have to hit the person who was being called out. At the end of the game, students from different teams got a chance to know one another.
The next activity was the Photo Game. Everyone was split into their respective teams. 2 teams competed with each other. This activity allowed students to interact with one another, enhanced the teamwork and communication skills with the EMRS team.

Conclusion & Learning Points
The team bonding came to an end and Team 3 emerged victorious! They were rewarded with prizes. Furthermore, the other 3 teams were rewarded with prizes too! Even though each team had different prizes, every one shared their prizes among one another. The team bonding activities left us with a greater sense of teamwork and communication. It helped us to know one another better and also fostered our ties.

In conclusion, the team bonding session was successful as everyone had a great time. With better teamwork and communication, we hope that we will be able to work better and plan many successful events and roadshows in the weeks to come.

Community & Team Bonding Event 2017

Community Event 2017

Date: 5 January 2017
Time: 9am to 11.30am
Location: Ren Ci Nursing Home

Background
The community event was created to spread some joy during the festive season. It was also created to provide EMRS students an opportunity to plan an event. We contacted numerous charitable organisations and were finally able to secure a date with Ren Ci Nursing Home.

Objectives
The objectives of our event are to spend some time with the residents at Ren Ci Nursing Home and to bring smiles to their faces by engaging them with activities such as a rooster puzzle game. To share the joy of this festive period, we prepared gifts related to the lunar new year for the residents.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Overall In-charge: Brian & Lisa
The roles for overall in-charge include contacting the homes, coming up with the activities to be carried out and ensuring that the whole team participates actively throughout.
  • Logistics: Cass & Julian
The roles of the logistics ICs include ensuring that the materials and tokens of appreciation are completed on time. They also brought the materials to the home and kept the extras with them.

Pre-Event
Before the event, we got in touch with a number of homes, ranging from children's homes to elderly homes. After we confirmed that we will be visiting Ren Ci Nursing Home, we finalised a morning of activities to carry out with the residents. Activities included conversing with the elderly, putting together a rooster puzzle, playing chinese chess with those who are interested as well as singing Chinese New Year songs to them.

We went down to the nursing home for a recce to gather more information on the profile of the residents and the space we have to conduct activities. We also prepared tokens of appreciation for the residents - framed hand-drawn pictures and stringed origami cranes. Next, we split the 25 volunteers into 5 groups based on gender as well as language proficiency, ensuring at least one dialect-speaking member in each group.

Actual Event
Rachel, the in-charge from the volunteer department, greeted us warmly when we arrived at the nursing home. She settled us in a central room and gave us a brief introduction of the place. She went through the safety guidelines and the do's and don'ts of the nursing home.

After the briefing, we set off in our groups to cover 3 female and 2 male wards. At first, we were quite shy and afraid to interact with the residents at the home. Many of the residents suffered from various illnesses that affected their appearance or psychological well-being. This caused us to feel uneasy when approaching the residents. However, we quickly warmed up to them and found out that the residents there were very nice people, and many of them were very fun and interesting to talk to.

Many of the residents there also spoke dialects such as Hokkien, Teo Chew and Cantonese as their first language, with a minority speaking English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. This posed a barrier when conversing with the residents as most of us could only speak English and Mandarin. Despite this language barrier, we tried our best to spend our time with the residents and provide companionship and a listen ear to them for the morning.

We spent a good 2 hours at the nursing home talking and interacting with the residents. We carried out the arts and crafts activity we had planned, sticking wings, beaks and other parts together to form a rooster, in celebration of the coming lunar new year. The residents at the home were very participative and enjoyed the event we had planned. We gave out the framed drawings and helped them tie the stringed origami to decorate their bed. Groups that had enough time were able to sing the songs we had prepared for the residents.

Post Event
After the event, we thanked Rachel for giving us the opportunity to spend the morning with the residents at Ren Ci Nursing Home. We passed her the remaining tokens of appreciation so that they could be passed to the residents that we did not manage to cover.

Following the event, we did housekeeping for the EMRS room and ensured that everything was returned to their original state.

Conclusion & Learning Points

Prior to the visit, most of our team members did not have any experience visiting a nursing home, Through the community event, we were able to experience how life is like in a nursing home. This event also built a stronger sense of compassion and giving back to society in all EMRS members. We displayed a strong capacity for growth by developing qualities reflective of a responsible leader and citizen in the making by showing empathy towards those who are in need, and being grateful of what we have. Moreover, conversing with the residents really helped us break out of our comfort zone.

In conclusion, our team community event at Ren Ci Nursing Home helped us to develop a positive attitude, and improve our interpersonal skills and teamwork. Despite the difficulties we faced to engage the residents and execute the planned activities, we were able to spend time and interact with the residents, which is far more meaningful. Overall, it was a truly insightful and unforgettable experience.

The event started off in United Square shopping mall, where everyone split up into their respective teams and started off with the first game, Picture Hunt. The first part of this game was to find animal dustbins and mimic their poses. Following that, the ICs handed out clues for the locations of the second part of the game, which required members to search for shops and take selfies with the store name. Ultimately, the initials were to spell out JIAYOU. This game also served the purpose of taking pictures with everyone as lasting memories.

After the indoor activities, we had games at the park beside United Square. We played spinning charades, mannequin challenge, human knot and many others. Brian also taught the groups a dance, and we had Ms Quek and Mr Sudesh to judge which team did it best. We ended off with a mass clap tree boat game and prize presentation.

We conducted a survey after the event to gather feedback from EMRS members regarding the team bonding activities. We found that 72% of participants felt that the duration of 3 hours was just right, and that the activities we conducted were extremely fun and engaging. Overall, the event achieved our objective of fostering closer bonds among team 2 and 3 members, with most members forging new friendships through the afternoon of activities.

Conclusion & Learning Points

The roles for overall in-charge includes taking care of everyone and ensuring that the whole team is able to carry out their tasks well independently.

  • Advertising & Promotions: Cindy, Fakhrusy
Under advertising & promotion, the ICs had to design the event poster, flyers and promote the event through social media. word-of-mouth and et cetra.

Our posters needed to be done within a tight deadline as approval from the director was needed before we could publicise the poster / flyers. Flyers were then given out to students around campus. Our team also came up with some A&P ideas to decorate the whole event venue to make it more lively and vibrant. Our team also came up with handmade A&P materials to decorate the whole event venue to make it lively and vibrant

Actual Event (13 - 15 Dec)
Day 1
During the first day of our event, we took almost two hours to set up due to the lack of experience. The response from customers on the first day of the event was good as there was already a crowd that started to come in around 10:00am, which was before the actual start time. Moreover, during our free time, some of us walked around the campus to distribute flyers to further increase the awareness for the Christmas fair.

Day 2
On the second day, the whole team was already well versed with the setup and hence, everything was ready within an hour. However, we realised that there was not enough crowd at the atrium. Therefore, we decided to have mobile selling to boost our sales. Everyone was split into team as task to walk around the canteen / staff's rooms to sell our products such as socks, mac book covers and floats. At the end of the day, everyone managed to clear most of the stocks and everything went smooth as silk.

Day 3
On the last day, despite everyone being both mentally and physically drained, we pushed through and started to tear down at 4:00pm. Thereafter, we gathered all the feedback from vendors and received positive comments on the overall three days fair. By 5:00pm, everything went as planned and things were removed from the atrium to allow the next event to proceed with their set up.

Post-Event
After the event, we did housekeeping for both EMRS and Fixtures rooms and ensured that everything was returned back to their original state. Also, we did a final stock count for our consignment booths to ensure that all goods sold tallied with the sales figure before the vendors came and colected their remaining stocks.

After

Conclusion + Learning Points
In a nutshell, we managed to establish good teamwork and team spirit throughout the whole event, we also successfully executed the tasks that were allocated, communicated effectively among ourselves and taking initiatives to support one another when there is a need. Nevertheless, we all agreed that our communication within the team could have been better to ensure that everything done was consistent and well-organised.

Last but not least, as a team, we managed to meet our sales target with the cooperation of all the vendors as their products were sold very quickly and affordably to our target audience of NYP staff and students.

Retail-Entrepreneurship Fair 2016

A Tree-mendous Christmas Affair

Date: 12 December 2016

Time: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Venue: Block A, Level 2, Outside D'Studio

Background
It was an exciting time for the retail students as they set up their booth for the Retail Entrepreneurship fair. The fair is a unique opportunity for these students to apply their knowledge to a real life scenario. For the first time, the fair involved a fundraising component for two charities; World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Movement for the Intellectually Disabled for Singapore (MINDS).  There were other merchants like Lumiex and NYP Streetwear & Drawstring to donate their proceeds to these charities.

Objective
Our objective is to raise awareness and attract people to this event, and we accomplished through the distribution of flyers and posters. We provided retail students fixtures for their booths and accommodated to their requests to the best we can. Furthermore, being associated with corporate social responsibility, we aimed to raise funds through the sales of drawstring bags for charity organisations WWF and MINDS.

Our Roles
We were tasked to assist in the event, in different departments such as Advertising and Publicity (A&P), Logistics and Finance. A&P came up with posters to publicise the event and hand-made decorations to liven the event area, logistics managed the required fixtures and laid out the floorplans, and finance came up with budget proposal and sales target.

OUR FIRST TIME DOING A Q-POLE POSTER!!

Pre-Event
Prior to the event, our team placed more focus on the Advertising & Publicity activities as it required more manpower - designing of posters, doing up the christmas decorations and raising awareness for our event by going around the campus to give out flyers and put up posters. Not forgetting Finance & Logistics, we set aside a budget, a sales target and coordinated with the lecturers and retail students for logistic matters.

Event Day
Our team reported to the EMRS room early on the bright and sunny day at 8.30 a.m. Priority goes to our retail students so we started moving the super heavy tables and arranged the retail booth fixtures for them; which were all set up before 10 a.m as per planned. Continuing on, we set up our remaining CSR booths and decoration for the event till 11 a.m. The setup wasn’t as smooth as we would have hoped, but we managed to get the event running on time.

Public Reactions
After the event area was set up, we executed publicity stunts to create social buzz. We went around in our Santa and hand-made Gingerbread-men costumes to give out flyers and interact with the public. Phones were taken out to take snapshots of our Santa and Gingerbread-men, and many of them was eager to take photo with them as they went around the school.

Setting up the sound system
To create a lively and festive atmosphere, we used the sound system. Christmas songs and latest hits were played (we literally played ‘Closer by The Chainsmokers’ 20 times) and students were allowed to promote their own retail booths. To add onto the atmosphere before passersby are able to hear the music, we pasted paper snowflakes on the glass doors to give off the Christmas feel. In the midst of setting up, we encountered difficulties as we did not know which cables were supposed to connected to which parts. However, with some help, we successfully set up the sound system before 11 a.m.

IMG_9100.JPGIMG_9101.JPGIMG_9095.JPG

These are the 4 retail booths - HandPicked, Moonlight, LeMascs and Style:U that we helped to set up. They also prepared their Visual Merchandising decorations and were ready for sales by 11am. However, there were slight hiccups which we managed to overcome. An example of this would be when one team stuck their poster to the wall, which is not allowed. Thus we provided them with an aisle stand for them to showcase their poster.

NYP Streetwear & Drawstring was manned by EMRS Team 2, we were allocated into different shifts for cashiering

To attract more people to our event, we also had a redemption booth whereby students/staff had to present their flyers in exchange for sweet

After Event
When the event ended at 5pm, we carried out the closing process for all the booths. Our team split the responsibilities and proceeded with our duties. The finance team carried out a stocktake for the CSR booth (Drawstring and Streetwear) to record the stock status after the event sales before handing over the remaining stocks to D’ Studio. This is to ensure that there is no discrepancy in the sales and float amount. The team removed the posters that were placed at various locations and christmas decorations. Also, removing the fixtures before returning them back to the logistics room.

Conclusion
In a nutshell, the event was a success. We managed to attract crowds to the Retail Entrepreneurship Fair and thus the sales for our Retail and CSR booths was substantial.
Everyone went home happily, with the gifts in hand, just in the nick of time for the holiday festivity while vendors cheered on their achieving their sales targets. For  EMRS Team 2, it had been a long and weary day but was no doubt an exciting occasion to apply their ideas to a real-world setting and help raise some funds for good samaritans such as the WWF & MINDS. Perhaps, more importantly, we made memories fostering a spirit of good teamwork and communication.
