Moon Cake Event 2012

Mid-Autumn Festival is an auspicious period for the Chinese community, where people usually buy mooncakes to celebrate the event. Therefore, an event was proposed to sell moon cakes to the lecturers and students in Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) that have not bought their mooncakes and are hoping to get it just in time for the festival.

Before the event could commence, a group of students volunteered to call vendors to enquire if they would be interested to collaborate with us. Vendors ranged from hotel brands to local bakeries, such as Goodwood Park, Conrade and BreadTalk.  After much consideration, we selected the vendors which were shortlisted- BreadTalk, Bakerzin, Peach Garden and Tai Thong.

The initial idea was to use an online site to allow customers to order their mooncakes and print the form out to make payment at our booth in the shopping arcade outside MSC studio.

Unfortunately, there were technical complications and we could not carry on using the website. This led to Plan B – which required mass email of order forms to all the staff in NYP.
Booths were to be set up for manual ordering and to collect payments. The team came up with the concept to decorate the booth, by making colourful paper lanterns to be hung at the booth as well as labels to indicate the different mooncake brands we were selling. The booth was set outside of MSC studio, the nerve centre of the school where most people converge on at least once a day.

In addition, the in charge of Advertising & Promoting (A &P) put in effort into designing posters, brochures and order forms with the help from team members and the supervisor. Instructions on the payment were also included. The posters were to create awareness to help market our products.

Let the event begin!
The event started on the 12th of September and ended on the 28th of September. The booth was opened for ordering and payment from 12th to 20th of September and the sampling day was set on the 13th for customers to taste the mooncakes and hopefully entice them into buying the mooncakes.  Mobile selling was also done to increase awareness!

On the 20th of September at 5pm, we stopped taking orders and collated the sales. Even though we may not have achieved our goal of 5000 SGD, we managed to sell more than we expected.

The ordering and delivering of mooncakes were planned by logistics by contacting vendors through calling and emailing to them. Also, we accepted special orders that required delivery on 21st September while the rest of the mooncakes were to be delivered on the 26th and 27th of September.

The delivery for Tai Thong and Peach Garden were delivered thanks to our helpful supervisor and team members as these brands do not provide delivery services.
Finally, the mooncakes were delivered to all our customers along with a “Thank you” card in appreciation for their support which were handmade by our team members.

Although there were mistakes and unforeseen mishaps, our team persevered and was able to execute the whole event successfully. J

EPIC 2012 @ NYP

On 12th September, Singapore Manufacturers' Federation (SMa) and NYP jointly organized a seminar (EPIC 2012) which was held at NYP’s Theatre for the Arts (TFA). CEOs and senior management as well as staff from Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs) were the target audience of the seminar. NYP’s School of Engineering together and School of Business Management EMRS were involved in the helping out of the event.

EMRS was assigned to support this event and this was the first task of our TEP. On the first week, our dress code for the event was decided to be black formal as it projects a professional image to the guest/participants.

Prior to the event, student leaders accompanied our supervisor with the organizing team from SEG and members from SMa to the planning meetings of the seminar. We were asked to come up with a floor plan for the seminar. The team discussed and created the floor plan and manpower list for the seminar.

From these meetings, we learnt that we should always update the team so that event will run smoothly. At the first meeting, we were instructed to print the guest’s name on the stickers which were provided by the main person in charge of the event, Mr David Soo. The team completed the task given in time despite the addition of more guest’s names. The guest’s credentials were neatly printed on to the name labels.

At the second meeting, we were given the task to pack the goodie bags for the event. We managed to pack a total number of 179 goodie bags for the seminar. The items packed were pamphlets and NYP brochures. Furthermore, we received the directional signage posters from Mr Soo to be placed around the school.

Directional signs for the event

The day before the event, team 2 and team 3 went for rehearsal at the TFA together. The team had to set up the equipment that is needed for the seminar outside TFA and the function room.
While some of the members were stationed inside the TFA to assist the lecturers with the giving out of token of appreciation, changing the beverages for the speakers and ushering. In addition, the team put up directional signage around the school according to the floor plan to direct the guests/participants to the TFA.

Booth all set up!

EVENT DAY FINALLY ARRIVES!! J

The teams reported at the TFA and their respective stations by 8:00am. Ushers were stationed around the atrium, car parks and TFA to assist the guests/participants. During registration which starts at 8:30am, the number of guests/participants attending the seminar was pleasantly more than expected. Some of us were stationed at the registration booth to help with giving out of the goodie bags to the guests/participants. Interested guests/participants can sign up for the tours such as Teaching Enterprise Tour, Technology Centre Tour and SiPi Talk.

The seminar commenced at 9:00am. The seminar featured 7 experts who spoke on the subject ‘Towards the Next Manufacturing Revolution’. Guest-of-honor for the event was Mr. Valerio Nannini, the Managing Director of NestlĂ© Singapore (Pte) Ltd.  During a short recess, EMRS crew members were on hand to help guide guests/participants to the function room for their tea break/lunch.

The seminar ended at 2.30 pm with participants gathering around together getting ready for the tours to Teaching Enterprise Tour or Technology Centre Tour and the SiPi Talk.

Overall, the event was successful. The seminar received good feedback from satisfied guests and the EMRS team members were praised for our efforts in helping the event run smoothly. It was even mentioned by the organizer SMa that they would be happy to have EMRS organize future events. Lecturers from SEG also commented on our professional image at the seminar.

Lastly, our team is also very grateful for team three’s help and all advice given by the supervisors during the preparations of the event.

EMRS Team Building Games Part 2

EMRS Team Building Games Part 2
On Friday, 28th September 2012, we had our second Games Day at the sports hall. The objectives of this are to have fun, relieve stress and team-bonding.
We started the day off by playing a card game called the murderer, followed by dodge ball and finally captain ball.
For the murderer game, we arranged the tables and chairs together before we start. After the explanation on how the game is going to be played, everyone was excited and eager to play the game. As some of us do not know how to play the game, no one was killed and no murderers were caught. We realized that it was because the tables were too big and everyone could not see clearly. Thus, we decided to move to the sports hall to continue the game.
At the sports hall, we formed a big circle to continue the game. Since we had one round of trial, we had a better idea of how to play the game. Hence, the game was carried out smoothly.
Next up, it was the dodge ball game! We formed a circle with one team and the other team inside the circle. The team standing on the outside threw the ball at the team inside to eliminate the team inside from the game. The ball was thrown at them for 5 minutes until all the team members were eliminated. The team swapped places for another round before they were dismissed for a short water break.
After the water break, we tried a different formation. Instead of forming a circle, we got the teams to form a rectangle so that the teams have a larger area for everyone to move in. This made the game more challenging and exciting for everyone.

START OFF!!!
The last game was the captains ball! Initially we intended to use benches at the sports hall. However, we realized that it was unstable and so we used normal chairs instead. We realized that one team had all the tall people, and so they had a competitive advantage over the other. Nevertheless, the other team fought hard with a “never-say-die” spirit and the score was a  close 11-8. We then had a short water break and proceeded with round 2 of captains ball. The score ended up at a very close 8-6.
GOAL!!!
After a long afternoon of fun-filled activities, everyone was tired and we came back to the EMRS room. At the room, the students said that they find it that it was fun and a good opportunity for them to be more bonded but at the same time, it was somewhat boring as the captains ball was repeated. And home sweet home!

EMRS TEAM BUILDING GAMES

Last Wednesday (5th September 2012), we had our team building games! Both teams were involved in planning the games, Lennard from Team 2 and Khatau from team 3 were the in-charge of the event.

The objective of this event is to bond both teams together, allowing them to interact with one another and of course to have fun! Apart from each team's individual events, this allows both teams to work together as one.

This event consists of various games – starting with the mass dance, followed by an integrated version of running man and lastly, captains' ball.

For the mass dance, we are divided into both our teams. Lennard and Shi Rong guided us with the dance steps for the song "Oppa Gangnam Style". At first were rather reluctant to learn and start dancing as we felt that the dance moves were very awkward. We spent most of the time laughing at each other, and our in-charge Mr Sudesh even joined in to dance with us after much persuasion. With the encouragement from Mr Sudesh, we finally started attempting to dance. After about 5 minutes of practice, Team 2 had a mini dance off against team 3. While Team 2 had some very enthusiastic individuals, (Lennard and Sean did the all the step; the rest were not taught) Team 3 had slightly better team coordination, and the dance ended in a draw.

Shi Rong and Lennard were teaching us the dance steps.

All of us were paying attention to them.

We were trying out the dance moves.

Next, all of us went down to the atrium to continue our second game, which was the integrated version of running man. 12 cards were taken out of the deck with one card to each member, and hidden around the fountain near the atrium. The students were then to find the cards to decide on teams for the next half of the game. For team 2 was required to find all the "hearts" poker cards while for team 3 was required to find all the "clubs" poker cards.

Where are the cards?

Team 2 spent a long time searching for the last missing card, while team 3 had already found all the cards, which meant they had already won half of the game. When Team 2 had finally found all of the cards, with everyone in the team holding on to one card, the students found their counterparts from Team 3 who held the card with the same number.

Participants with the same numbered poker card were to pair up and to have one of their arms taped together. They were to then stick a strip of masking tape to their shirt with their names written on it to represent their name tags. The objective of the game was for pairs to tear out the name tags of the other pairs, while defending their own. When the name tags of the pair were torn out, they would be out of the game.

This was purely coincidental.

Some tags just wouldn't stick.

Unfortunately, in the midst of the game, Sares from team 3 fell and injured her leg when she was running down the slope. The in-charge had overlooked the considerations to be taken during the game. To make matters worse, we did not have the first aid kit on hand. We should have considered that it was a sloped area and exclude the area during the game to avoid any accidents like this. However, through this game, the pairs from the two teams have an opportunity to interact and to get to know the other team’s members.

Lastly, we had our captains’ ball match. All of us find that this game was the highlight of the event because it was the enjoyable and competitive. Initially, all the members from both teams were playing together, and subsequently followed by gender matches. Though Team 2 did their best, Team 3 won the game in the end. Improvements to be made would be to have better team coordination. Most of the class thought that the time for the game should be extended. Through this segment, it seeks to help both teams to work on their teamwork toward a goal – to win.

Team 2 strategizing!

Team 3 strategizing!

RAIN?!

We then returned to class for debrief, where everyone shared their opinion about the session. The general consensus was that everyone “hated” the dance and loved captains’ ball. While embarrassing and awkward, the mass dance helped to bond people together through the “we did something ridiculous together” effect. Prizes were also given out, to Nabilah and Rebecca for winning the Running Man game by tearing off the most tags, and to Team 3 for winning Captains’ Ball. Unfortunately, Team 2 was too busy with their project to join the subsequent feast outside the class.

Through this event, we are able to get to know more about the whole EMRS members and also learnt that it is vital to take into considerations of any possible hazards, so that we can minimise any injures that might arise from the game. We also learn the need for planning contingencies should unexpected events occur, and thinking through plans thoroughly and carefully. A checklist of items needed would have also helped us be more organized.

Overall, everyone enjoyed the event, and suggested we have a games day more often.
Stirling Graduation Event
On 7th September, NYP hosted a graduation event for the school of Stirling. Dress code of the day is white top with black pants/skirt. Our job scope is to be ushers. It is a small affair where there were close to 300 people attending the event including the 60 proud graduands. To add on, our principal,  Mr Chan Lee Mun also received an award from Stirling!

Congratulations to Mr Chan!!
Proud graduates together with their parents!

Once again, we would like to congratulate all the graduates who have persevered for the past two years and also to Mr Chan for receiving an award! This event was as an eye-opener to us as we now know how an overseas graduation ceremony is being executed. One of the lesson learnt is that we now know how to react to an unexpected the situation when it arises. For example, we were informed at the last minute that ushers were needed for the gown room and registration table but manpower was limited. Thus, some of us would have to play dual roles and support one another to ensure that the event was smooth-sailing and proceeded without any hitches. Overall, it was a great experience and everyone enjoyed it!

Entrephoria @ Bugis Street level 3 Atrium

ENTREPHORIA

Bugis Street level 3 Atrium
16th and 17th August 2012

EMRS Team 2 was assigned to organize an event at Bugis Street level 3 atrium from 16th to 17th August 2012, from 12pm to 9pm.

OICs - Min ming and Renald
A&P - Sapnaa (IC), Nigel, Adeline Seah and Sa'adah
Fiance - Si Ying (IC) and Marilynn
Logistics - Adeline Tan (IC), Hamdan and Wang Peng

Initially, we came up with two proposals, "Cosplay showcase"  and "Student Entrepreneur Fair". However, our team decided to carry out the Entrepreneur Fair, due to time constraints and the event will be held during exam period.

We came up with a few themes: "Like A Boss", "Bizworks", "Young, Alive and Enterprising" and "Entrephoria". We voted and concluded with the theme, "Entrephoria" as it takes a combination of entrepreneur (which is based on our proposal) and euphoria (meaning a state of intense happiness and self confidence).

For this event, we source for student entrepreneur vendors namely, G-Feel iphone, Shop 23, Summerlove, JNR entertainment and 90's candy. We also brought in two external vendors such as Benta Berry and Sticky candy.

To showcase our event, we came up with a banner design draft and brainstormed on the design of the main poster, flyers and vendor posters. We decided to use the Bugis Street building as the background for the main poster and backdrop for the Polaroid booth. We also uses the product images provided by the vendors to draft out the flyer and vendor posters and decorated the booths by designing them according to what the vendors are selling.

On the first day, the setting up of the event was done smoothly and efficiently with the help of team 3 members. However, half way through the event we received feedback from our supervisors that our floor plan appears defensive and not attracting shoppers. Hence, we decided to change the formation of the floor plan from 9-booths to 7-booths. This then attracts more customers at the later part of the day.

Initial Floor Plan
Readjusted Floor Plan
At the end of the day, we conducted a debrief and inform the team that we has excess manpower due to the change of floor plan. Hence, a few of us will report later for the next day.

On the last day there was a slight delay with the set up as the new batch of team 3 members were unfamiliar with the products. Everything resume to normal and sales start to pick up slowly.

Tear down on the last day was completed fast and more efficiently as everyone were brief on their tasks and cooperate well.

We had a hard time during the pre-preparation of the event and encountered many problems such as changes to fixtures needed, urging the vendors for stock list and time constraints for A&P. However, we manage to overcome all these and make the event a success! Although, its a lot of hard work, everything is worth it after seeing how successful the event turned out to be.

Special thanks to everyone .....
